PAL Reading in the Classroom @ SK Kertau, Chenor, Maran, Pahang

Tom James, TELL2 Mentor in Chenor, Maran, Pahang, has been encouraging the implementation of PAL Reading in schools.

Engku Aishatul Ruhi Bt Engku Arif, TELL2 Teacher at SK Kertau in Chenor, Maran, has embraced PAL Reading in her teaching practice. One concern she had when she joined TELL2 late last year was how to teach reading to a mixed ability class, that included more than a few remedial students. She found it difficult to give individualized attention and differentiate her lessons, until I helped her discover Peer Assisted Learning. By using PAL in her reading instruction, all students can benefit from having one-to-one interaction and improve their reading fluency.

PAL Reading Funfair @ SK Jengka 2, Jempol, Maran, Pahang

Sarah Higgs, Jempol Mentor, coordinated a PAL Reading Funfair at SK Jengka 2 in Jempol, Maran, Pahang.  English teachers from SK Jengka 2 and Tom James, Mentor in Chenor, assisted at the event.  The aim of the funfair was to kick-start PAL Reading for the school and to have fun!  Students learned the process of PAL Reading and practiced using books from the school library.  Then they were divided into three houses, and rotated through three stations.  Each station had a story book from Oxford Owl, a mini-lesson, and a fun game to play!  The event was a great success, and non-TELL2 teachers were very impressed.  Syeo Narolhisa, a non-TELL2 English teacher at SK Jengka 2 says, "The programme was very exciting.  Children participated in the activities.  Teachers also learnt new things.  The mentors were very supportive.

The event was so successful, that Sarah & Tom plan to have the event in all schools in Jempol and Chenor respectively.  With the addition of Scholastic Book Clubs in schools, PAL Reading will be even more effective for improving reading fluency!
